A welcome from Steve Bromley

Hello from Steve!

I'm Steve Bromley - a games user researcher.

Thank you for signing up today! Here's a quick intro to me, and what we'll be doing together on the course.

New for 2024

This year, we have three times the content. As before, you will learn how to plan and run a qualitative study. But this year, we'll also plan, design, and analyze a quantitative survey and learn how to navigate the hiring process for a games company.

You'll also get to run your own test on a real game with real players thanks to our bundled credits generously given by PlaytestCloud.

I'm looking forward to working with you to master games user research, and kick-start your games career together!

Lesson Summary

Steve Bromley is a games user researcher with over a decade of experience in the games industry. He has worked on titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, SingStar, and LittleBigPlanet series. Steve actively engages with the games user research community and has been a member of the steering committee for the IGDA's games user research special interest group. He also started the games user research mentoring scheme, which pairs individuals interested in a career in games user research with industry professionals.

In his interactions with students and career switchers, Steve has identified common challenges such as gaining experience in working with games, proving expertise to hiring managers, and understanding what games user research looks like in industry. To address these issues, Steve has created a hands-on and practical course that not only teaches about game user research but also provides opportunities to apply the learnings.

The course covers topics such as research objectives, study planning, conducting studies, and analyzing findings. Participants will have the chance to lead their own study or analyze a pre-prepared study and create a report highlighting usability issues in an in-development game. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate demonstrating their understanding of games user research fundamentals.

In addition to the self-guided course, there is an active Discord community where participants can interact with Steve and other individuals on their game user research journey.

This year, the course includes three times the content compared to previous years. In addition to qualitative studies, participants will learn how to plan, design, and analyze quantitative surveys. They will also gain insights into navigating the hiring process for a games company.

By completing this course, participants will be equipped with the skills to impress hiring managers and kick-start their game user research careers.
